Today we're introducing you to Ana, an incredible Dallas Animal Services (DAS) volunteer.
Note: Interview has been edited for readability.
What initially inspired you to start volunteering/fostering with DAS?
I heard a volunteer sharing about their "Ticket to Ride" puppy, and it piqued my interest. I thought, "Hey, what is that?" That introduction opened up my world to DAS, and I knew I had to become a volunteer!
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your time as a volunteer/foster?
One of my favorite memories was being a pet taxi. Just as my volunteer shift was ending, I learned that a dog needed a ride to their family. I got to reunite a family with their missing furry member. It was incredibly heartwarming and a full-circle moment, especially since it all started with the "Ticket to Ride."
What motivates you to continue volunteering/fostering and giving back to the community?
It's the joy of connecting families with their new pets or reuniting them with lost ones.
How has volunteering/fostering impacted your life personally or professionally?
The biggest impact has come from the people I’ve met. As a volunteer and foster, I’ve encountered dogs and cats in all kinds of situations. The staff and fellow volunteers at DAS have taught me patience, kindness, generosity, and a lot of resilience.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering volunteering/fostering but hasn't taken the leap yet?
You’ll regret not doing it sooner! There’s a role for everyone who wants to help, from hands-on to hands-off opportunities. Trust me, you’ll enjoy your time as a volunteer, and you’ll meet some pretty cool people along the way!
Can you tell us about a project or initiative you're currently working on as a volunteer?
I'm part of Home Again Heroes, a group of volunteers dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their families. Seeing the Return to Owner (RTO) numbers rise is always heartwarming. Pro tip: Microchip your pet, and keep it updated—it’s the best way to ensure you’re reunited!
What do you enjoy most about being a part of the DAS volunteer/foster community?
I love the fun events we organize to raise awareness, especially the adoption events! Come meet us at the next one and find your new buddy!
How do you balance your volunteer/foster commitments with other aspects of your life?
The great thing about being a DAS volunteer is the flexibility. You can tailor your involvement to your schedule. Some tasks can be done from home and are quick but impactful, while others may take more time. You'll find your sweet spot!
What are your future goals or aspirations related to volunteering/fostering?
This year, I was able to do a daycation for two pups, both of whom found permanent homes the same day! My goal is to do more daycations and reach at least 150 volunteer hours. My ultimate dream? To help with more community impact programs, especially for our Spanish-speaking population.
